Blog Snobs

"I'm sorry that people are so jealous of me...but I can't help it that I'm so popular."
quote from the movie Mean Girls

A definition of "snob" I found recently was this:

a person who believes himself or herself an expert or connoisseur in a given field and is condescending toward or disdainful of those who hold other opinions or have different tastes regarding this field.

The "field" we are talking about today is that of blogging. As I'm sure many of you know, blogging can be a wonderful thing. You can find other bloggers with similar interests as your own, you can get feedback, you can laugh, connect, be entertained, and if you're an emotional type of person, you may actually find yourself crying over at someones neck of the virtual woods. You can see a blog friend turn into a real life friend (ahem) and you can feel like you are a "part" of something. It's true when they say that blogging is a community, a comradeship, a stomping ground for us all who have something to say.

But just like every other group of girls that get together, there are bound to be cliques, the cool crowd, the mean girls...

or in this arena

The Blog Snobs.

dun dun dun

In my never to be humble opinion, there are a few things that qualify someone as a blog snob. In no particular order...

BE SUPERIOR. And make sure everyone else knows it. I followed a certain blogger on twitter one time (names withheld for shame purposes) and this person tweeted something to the effect of "why do certain bloggers have to be so pretentious" to which I kiddingly replied "well that isn't a very nice way to describe me." (If you even semi know me? I am a heap of sarcasm. I kid all the time.) Her response? "I wasn't talking about you, nor do I have any idea who you are or what your blog is even about." Talk about not being able to take a joke. And for the record? That snotty blogger? At the time, she had hundreds more followers than me, so I assumed she thought I was a nobody. I just checked a few days ago and I currently have 500+ more followers than her...

Photobucket

THE FOLLOWING GAME. Allllllll the bloggers say it: "Blogging isn't about the number of followers." I'm just gonna call bullshit on this one. Every single blogger wakes up and logs onto their page, hoping to see their follower count go up. I honestly cringe every time I read a post about how "followers are not important whatsoever, it's all about the writing." I cringe for two reasons: a) they are lying sacks of sh#t and b) yes, it is all about the writing, but how come we can't just come right out and say that if you suck as a writer, your follower count won't go up, but if you have a gift and can make people laugh/cry/connect/feel something...than you will be successful and see the fruits of your labor? Not everyone can be a pro-athlete, just like not everyone can be a pro-blogger.

THE FOLLOWING GAME PART II. No one starts out with one thousand followers. Every single blogger starts out with the humble number of one. single. follower. I did, she did, and that person who has twelve thousand followers did too. I can't tell you how many times when I was just starting out, I commented some blogger who had a million and one followers. I commented and commented and commented. Not only because I liked what I was reading, but because I hoped that yes, one day this blogger might take notice and come by my space on the interwebs and maybe comment my blog too. Most of the time? They never took notice 'til my follower count went up. As if I wasn't good enough, as if I didn't start out exactly where they did...needless to say, I no longer comment them.

Photobucket

LET'S TALK ABOUT SPONSORS, SHALL WE? First things first, I have no problem whatsoever with making money off your blog. But more times than once, I have come across a few uber-successful bloggers who say that their sponsors come first, and then their readers. Excuse me? If it wasn't for your thousands of readers, you wouldn't have those high paying sponsors. How about giving credit where credit is due...respond to your readers, engage with them, comment them back...talk about forgetting the little people...and while we're at it, no one likes to read "sponsored" posts every other day. Go back to your roots, stick with what made you successful in the first place.

A LINK-UP ANYONE? HOW ABOUT A GUEST POST? Like I stated earlier, everyone started out small. But it seems that when a blogger gets successful, they suddenly think their blog is sacred...and that maybe they don't want to "congest it" with a link-up button. Think about it: most big bloggers don't participate in link-ups. But when they host one themselves? You better believe they expect everyone and their mother to link-up with them. Why is this? I can only assume that they think their shit don't stink, and that they are "too good" to link-up with someone hundreds of followers beneath them.

About that guest post? Don't even think about asking someone who has a ton more followers than you. They will think you are either "using" them or "trying to get their readers for yourself." Don't you know that they are way better than you??

YOU CAN'T SIT WITH US. And then there is the cool girl blog circle where they won't let anyone new in. You know 'em when you see 'em...every time one of them has guest bloggers, they always have each other. I can't tell you how many times I have been passed over for a guest post because I didn't have near the amount of followers as the blog host. And now that I am creeping up in the follower arena, slowly but surely? Those "bloggers" are reaching out to me and asking me if I would like to guest post. I politely turn them down.

I'M SO UGLY/FAT/STUPID PLEASE REAFFIRM ME. You know the ones, the blog posts that are so beyond self-deprecating that they are just begging for positive comments. Please tell them how gorgeous/skinny/smart they are and they will love you forever, and if your comment is super good, they may even link to you in the future!

Photobucket

Basically, if you are a decent person, an honest blogger and someone who just has a passion for writing, you may well be on your way to succeeding.

And if not?

You may very well be........

A BLOG SNOB.

  1. Ho-ly mo-ly.

First, I read this yesterday and didn't comment. Kill me, right? I didn't comment becuase I agreed with everything you said. Didn't feel like I needed to say, Ditto. But after reading some of the comments, I just have to say something. When did blogging become something that everyone has to like each other? Isn't that the point of a follow button? And just becuase someone follows you, doesn't necessarily mean that you should follow them back. I don't always respond to comments, but I try to respond to some of them.

AND some of the people who ask questions or say things, don't have an email attached to their account, so people CANNOT respond.

Blogging should be fun and Lindsey is right, not everyone should have a blog. I'm probably one of those people. I don't get to update every day, becuase it is a second job. I can't imagine having kids or a husband and trying to update. I can't juggle my own crazy life, and my social life, and family plus the ole blog sometimes.

    thanks for being awesome.

  3. I loved this post! You have such spunk in your writing, I always get a kick out of your blog. I'm one of those no-body bloggers who has like 15 followers and most of those followers are friends and family. Maybe I'll go somewhere with blogging, maybe I wont, but either way I love blogging and finding my voice through it as well as documenting my life in this corner of the woods =)

  4. New follower. I love this! It is so [unfortunately] true!

  5. I don't answer back to any of my comments unless the person who commented was asking me a question like where did I buy something, or what do i think? etc etc no question asked, then no comment back. I kinda think it's silly to write 40 + emails back to ppl that just stop by to say hi or agree with what you wrote. Alas in some bloggers eyes guess that makes me a blog snob LOL I commend those that have the time to write 40 plus emails back to every comment they get. Whew!

  6. Great post Raven! Thanks for your honesty, as usual!! :)

  9. You have no idea how many times I've said these things in my head. I just love this and you and not just cause we both think farrah on teen mom has an ugly cry. This post is amazing and there are certain people I hope read it! I'm dying to know who you were talking about. Don't worry I have big hair it's full of secrets. :)

Those cards are hilarious! I have come across all of these types as well. I have to admit something. If I comment and comment on someone's blog and they don't give me the time of day I stop reading theirs. Yes, it should be about "the writing" but you do want mutual appreciation from time to time. I guess their sh*t don't stink. lol!

I loved this post and completely agree with what you're saying.

But, don't you think it is a little odd that you are the one posting this? I love reading your blog, and find you hysterical. But lets be real. You? Never link up with smaller bloggers. Only comment on blogs in your "clique" (how clique-y is it to have a "group" called Teenage Dream?). Rarely respond to comments.

I don't think there is anything wrong with any of that, but let's not pretend you are the most community-centered, supportive, non-snob blogger there is.

Why be friends with someone who doesnt want to be friends with you? Its like a bad relationship. The man is saying "Girl, I don't want to be with you" and typical woman is all.. "But I really like you!! We can make it work". No, you can't. Get over it, crazy. Who cares if some douche bag girl in Idaho you'll never meet doesn't read your blog.

This whole situation just reminds me that some people need to take a step away from the computer. Some people are entirely too sensitive. And clearly I could never be blog famous. The other day I saw someone comment like "OMG that food looks so good. How did you make it". There isnt enough time in my day to answer how I made a damn grilled cheese. But even more hilarious- OMG, people legit get upset when people don't answer their ridiculous questions??!? LMAO.

There are 10,000 bloggers. Choose to follow the ones you want and forget about the rest.

  20. This, I think, is the best blog post I've ever read. I see there are a million comments here affirming that but seriously - so true and so glad I'm not alone in thinking these kinds of things! I have been struggling with so many of these topics lately, so it's good to know it's not just me being an outsider with a just-getting-started blog.

Your follower count just went up by one (me!) :)

Okay, it probably went up like, a million after this post, but one of the million is me!

Thanks for your honesty on this and calling it like it is!

  21. I found your blog through Living in Yellow. I absolutely loved this post. I nodded my head the entire way through and now I just want to high five you. I've been blogging for about 10 months now and any time I get a message from a "newbie" I respond as quickly as I can to help them out- we all deserve a chance in this blogging game. I also offer featured bloggers on my page (for free) to help give others exposure. And through being a nice, helpful person in this blogging world, I've made some really great friends- some long time bloggers, some just starting out. We all have a common interest so why not help each other out and be friendly?!

  24. Excellent post! I am no where near a professional blogger simply because I don't have the time to dedicate to writing. But as I seek out more blogs to read, I find there are definitely those blog snobs out there and I appreciate your honesty keeping it all in perspective!

  25. I just found your blog from Erin's blog {Living in yellow} and I loved everything about this post! :) You are the type of big blogger that us small bloggers need to look up to! Just sayin. :)

It seems like you have a lot of expertise in this area...are you...a blog snob!?

;) You know I adore you...and I kind of feel like a loser because the first time you commented on my blog, you had about as many followers as I currently do...and now? You have triple what I do. So, I kind of feel like the "bad writer" chick because you clearly are way cooler than I am. Which is fine. Whatever. But really...tell me your secret, okay? ;)

<3 your face. And this post.

  29. this post is amazing. it is everything I've wanted to say but didn't know how to. especially the cool girl blog circle! I have been to so many meet-ups where I feel completely shunned because my blog wasn't big enough or I'm not cute & fashionable enough or crafty enough or whatever. so so so annoying. thank you for writing this! loved it all!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Or here's a good one. How about the same group of "blog friends" who no matter HOW many people comment\tweet\ig comment\etc them, they still ONLY REPLY TO THEIR FRIENDS. Uhm. It makes me want to reach through the computer scream and smack them. Seriously?! That is NOT what blogging is about. And if someone takes the time to comment on something of yours or send a tweet...respond in some way!

I used to comment on these two bloggers stuff. Just because I enjoyed reading their blogs and I like commenting. And what did they do? Never responded. But they'd respond to their "Friends". I laughed and stopped commenting.

You'll never move forward as a blogger regardless of your 'follower count' if you can't learn to interact with people OTHER THAN your social group.

*all you's or forms of you are figurative and obviously not directed at...you...you know what I mean haha. And by you, I actually mean you.

ok, I read this yesterday and then came back to read it all again today and let you know that I read it twice. just in case you were wondering ... that's how much I loved it. every single part I was nodding and saying "uh huh, uh huh. yup". a few days ago I wrote about my dog eating my couch and for some reason people enjoyed seeing the pain that it brought me (go figure). I tried to respond in some way or form to 100+ comments ... and then I got dealthy ill and I haven't been to work all week. sooooo, you're right ... that's impossible and unhealthy. do NOT reply to this comment. don't do it, don't you dare think about doing it. or do ... cause I'd love to hear from you. jk.

    ReplyDelete
  44. These things need to be talked about! Everyone has some "snob" in them, whether they want to admit it or not and we all need a wake up call at some point in our life. I'm still wrapping my head around "sponsors". I know it's very beneficial for both parties (most of the time) but I don't want to have sponsors and feel like a sellout.. it's a tough situation!

    Love the post!!

  49. Love it Raven! Maybe it's just me, but i don't think the "audience" should expect a response on a comment. The author writes to write - if they want fame they aren't going to give a crap about you and if they are there for life documentation purposes they ultimately shouldn't care about how cute YOU think their kid is anyway!! I have my own blog - it sucks! I lack direction and haven't posted in months....I have 1 "follower" and a few stalkers, ultimately i should write because i want to not because I want the attention.

  54. This is one of the best posts I have ever read. Obviously I'm not the only one who thinks so seeing as it took me 3 minutes to scroll down to where I could leave a comment haha!
I am so glad you posted about this. Being a "beginner" blogger I have noticed all of these things with some of the blogs I have visited. It's sad that a lot of those people think they are better than everyone else. Everyone has there own style and it should be appreciated.
Blogging is all about the followers. It makes everyone feel good to know that people are reading what is important to them!

  61. Great post! This is my first time to your blog (I found you from hopping through others) and I am SO guilty of not being the best commenter!!! I truthfully read EVERYONE'S blogs that I follow but I seriously suck at commenting and replying. haha! But I swear I am not a snob!! I blame it on my kids. CRAZY freaking kids that suck the life out of me and take up ALL my time. And even though a new follower totally excites me...I swear I don't worry about it as much as maybe I should?? I've been blogging for 4 years and have under 400 followers. I should probably do more link ups and be SO MUCH better about exploring new blogs (because look...that's how I found you) but I just have to find the time, girlfriend! Never enough TIME!

But thanks for keeping it real today! You have a super cute blog :-)

  73. Hey girl - I hope you remember me. (Lyryn) Obviously I have been away from the "blog world" for a while now. After my marriage series last year, I was kind of emotionally drained from blogging and slowly gave up on trying to "keep up". I even stopped reading blogs - But from time to time stopped by and checked in on you!

Yesterday my friend Cara (I'm pretty sure you remember her too) called me telling me about this post. She was dying, read me the entire thing and then talked about it for an hour. Girl, you inspired us.

Let me start by saying... Fantastically written! You lady, have broken the mold. Finally, a big blogger that is telling the truth about the way it REALLY is. I always wanted to write something like this when I was blogging because I FEEL THE SAME WAY. You truly did it. You hit the nail on the head and so very refreshing it was.

I know that most of the comments are really awesome and encouraging, and I'm really thankful for that!! But I want to encourage you now in this as well... don't you dare (which I don't think you are)get discouraged in any of the negative comments. I'm pretty sure that you are a VERY self aware and confident person, so don't let these "mean girls" who didn't like your post get you down. What I have learned in the many years of blogging is that people only get nasty when they feel attacked. Because why? THEY DO IT!!!!! Really? ugh! I thought we all left this behind when we graduated high school, right?! lol.

So in all that... Honestly, I just wanted to say this post needs to be nominated for BEST post of the year - maybe of ALL times and great job!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are truly inspiring!

I'd really like to talk with you privately about a few other things. My head has been thinking about this post all night since I read this and I felt this strong urge to comment hoping you'll email me back. I know your a really busy lady, I'm not expecting anything. So if this is all you see, know this....

    Thank you!

My head has been thinking about this post all night since I read this and I felt this strong urge to comment hoping you'll email me back. I know your a really busy lady, I'm not expecting anything. So if this is all you see, know this....

    Thank you!

  76. BEST
    POST
    EVER!!!!
Thank you for your honesty! I am not very good at blogging regularly...so yeah, not snob material here...anyway it always thrills me when I visit someone w/tons of followers, follow or leave them a comment, and they visit and return the favor! Too many "big fish" don't even bother. I realize they have tons of comments/etc, but still...throw the little people a bone every now and then!

  77. I'm new to blogger-land so this post was an interesting read! My one and only follower is my mom. Haha!
Following other "pro bloggers" does get a little discouraging sometimes because I think, geez I'll probably NEVER get a hundred followers, let alone 1500! But it's nice to know that not every pro blogger is a snob and it's cool that you took the time out to remember your roots and give a shout-out to us little pee-ons!

Thanks for the encouragement and telling it like it is.

  78. Amen. I have had some serious frustrated with a certain popular blogger who I know in real life from high school. After promising to do user posts for me, and many emails confirming it....she just flaked and left me in the ditch. An this wasn't the first one time something like this happened with her. Frustrating. Can't everyone just be nice? And upfront? Say no or say yes, but do what you say!

Hi Raven. Clicked over from Semi-Domesticated Mama. I just HAD to find out whether or not I'm a blog snob. You make some really great points and I appreciate your honesty! I've been blogging for 4 years and have achieved a certain level of success within my genre (humor writing), so I got to a point where I couldn't reply to every comment or Tweet. I just couldn't. In fact, I even closed my comments for the summer to help me focus on what I love - the writing (oh yeah, and also, my kids). I would hope that my readers are mature enough to understand that there are only so many hours in a day and not take my silence as a personal affront. I definitely know my blog stinks (particularly since I talk about poop so much). And my cafeteria table is always open to the "uncool" kids...they're more fun and real anyway. Pleased to meet you!

  80. You're right in many cases, I guess. I have been disheartened sometimes by not getting an answer by some of the more successful blogs I commented on (weird sentence, please grammar police, don't arrest me). But in some cases I did.
But for the tiny blogs just like mine it isn't easy to be seen, and I feel weird asking anyone if I could guest post or if they'd like to guest post (it's like asking the cool kids at school if they'd like to come to your birthday party for which your mom has organized embarrassing games ;-) hah hah

  81. Too funny. I just started blogging a month ago and am learning the tricks of the trade but am happy to say I've found some fun girls out there that keep me positive. I'll be following along and promise never to turn into a blog snob :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. LOL I had never heard of a "blog snob" before...I am slowly but surely becoming more educated! Love your blog, by the way :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. Preach it sista! lol.

This post is a huge comfort to me. What you said, "every single blogger starts out with the humble number of one. single. follower." It's so true. I've tried to swap ads with the larger blogs, but they take one look at my GFC count and I never hear from them again. What they fail to realize or take notice of, is that (1) I may not have the numbers yet, but I am an awesome blogger, and (2) When I do have those numbers, and they are looking to "partner up," I'm going to take great pleasure in telling them to hit the road :)

  84. seriously it really can feel like middle school!! I have said that to my husband on more than one occasion. so dumb that blogging can be that way... but it shouldn't be that way! and blogging is all about being unique and having your own story anyways so it's dumb that we are made to feel like we have to fit in sometimes. oh blogging... haha. sorry for my little rant. I just agreed with your comment a lot and wanted to reply! :)

    ReplyDelete
  85. It seriously does feel like middle school sometimes!! so dumb that it has become that way.... especially when people say all the time how it's good to be unique and have your own voice but then have to do everything the same to be in the little cliques. annoying! sorry for my rant, I just wanted to reply because I totally agreed :)

  86. Umm.. 289 comments. Hold the f'in phone. I can totally see why though, this post rocks. You seriously hit the nail on the head. I actually had one blogger (that I was sponsoring at the time) turn me down when I asked her to do a guest post because 'she was saving the guest post option for her sponsors'. Wtf. But I just politely said thanks and haven't sponsored her since. Gotta love people who think their shit doesn't stink.

  87. The best part of this blog is definitely finding the blogs of some very cool women! Yay, new blogs!
Debra, 6 (very important to me) followers (a handful more on twitter) and counting!

  88. I know this is an older post but I came across it via someone of RH and thought I would read. I already follow you because I LOVE YOUR BLOG..(& I love the new name..btw) But this post is really great. As someone who has had my current blog for only a few months...and only like 49 followers...I am RIDICULOUS about my follower count. It is just exciting to see that people are actually FOLLOWING your day to day bullshit on the interweb. haha anyhow...I cant say how much I love this post enough, or your blog for that matter!

  90. HAHAHA!!! You are SO AWESOME for posting this!!! I love it; it's all so true!!! You totally nailed the "dark side" of blogging!! I've told my hubby before that blogging sometimes feels like being back in high school where all of a sudden you feel inferior to the popular people! Love you for writing about this!!

    ReplyDelete
  91. Yes, yes, yes! Slow clapping here in VA for this post!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I'm a blog snob then. I don't care because I really don't have time to read, much less comment, on hundreds of blogs a day. I barely have time to write in my own blog, so of course I'm going to have a "clique" of people I became friends with when I first started. I comment when I have something to say, whether we're blog friends or not. And it's not about the number of followers for me. In fact, I blogged more when I had 30 followers than I do now. It may not be true for you, but it is for me, probably because I'm not here to participate in a popularity contest, or to make money.

I do follow back on Twitter every blogger that follows me. That's how I stay connected because that's my favorite social media platform. And I'm pretty proud of that.

    Cringe away.

  93. This is a great post. I love it! And agree with you, too!

I have to disagree on one thing, though... about every blogger saying she doesn't care about the number of followers and how they're all lying? Because whether anyone believes it or not, I REALLY don't care about how many followers i have, and i definitely do not check to see how many i have everyday! I have 200 something. That's about all i can tell you. And i TRULY don't care. Believe it or not!

That said, I'm not writing these amazing posts that other bloggers are writing! And if i were, maybe i would expect my count to go up? Maybe i would want more of an audience. But no... i do way too many linkups and recipes and other things. I do write meaty posts once in awhile... but not often like some big bloggers i see.

Love your blog though! And your points. Those blunt cards are HILARIOUS.

    ReplyDelete
  94. I agree - I love to blog but i really do not care how many followers i have! I like link ups though - a little too much! LOL

I'm one of the bloggers who is just (re)starting out and couldn't agree more with all of this. I'm glad to see someone who is a seasoned blogger is admitting to all of this! thank you for the honest post! this entire thing is true.

  114. Yep. Dealing with this now. I'm still new around blogging and I can think of TWO blogs off of the top of my head that I love to read and comment on regularly and they do not even so much as say "thank you".

    Whatever

    ReplyDelete
  115. lol love this post. I once emailed this blogger, she's very beautiful and popular but often posts those "..my pain..my misery..my heart ache..i dont feel good enough.." post, meanwhile every other day she does one of those "wear" posts and has some take a million pictures of her. I emailed her once, regarding this other blog that I used to be a participant of, it was to help girls self image, so I request that she guest post or put up a button or something. She had her "assistant" respond to me...it was pretty much an "unfortunately ___ ___ doesnt participate in those sort of things right now." Bitch, I've emailed major authors before and they have all written back themselves!!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I came across your blog (and this post) today, which I'm about 2 years late to! That said, I had to chime in because it's so dead on.

I still consider myself a blogging newbie and so I reach out to a lot of different bloggers to collaborate with and get to know. Most recently, I started an online magazine that focuses on different subjects (fashion, food, design, travel), and so I've contacted many different bloggers (new and established), and it's amazing the responses I get. Every single blogger who does not have a follower count of about 15,000 or more (per Twitter/Instagram records), immediately tells me they're too busy or uninterested in contributing to the magazine. It could be something as simple as just a quick, short paragraph review of a favorite hangout spot or whatever. Now, I don't want to be judgmental and say all of these bloggers are liars and that they indeed have the time because, honestly, how do I know? But I think it's in their responses that give it away. For example, if I'm a really busy blogger and can't guest post or contribute something to your blog, I would kindly decline but extend some kind of invitation along the lines of.."Please let me know when your article is out because X subject sounds like a great topic and I'd love to share it with my readers via Twitter/Facebook/etc."

But these bloggers never do that. I even had one blogger, who's name I won't mention, have the audacity to say she wouldn't share the highly positive article that was written on her (mind you, it had a ton of compliments and links to her blog) with her readers because she hadn't anticipated the article and was upset that she wasn't more involved with it.

When I see these bloggers, it makes me so disappointed that as women, not even bloggers, we can't support each other and contribute to each other's success. I get emails from readers who want advice about the fashion industry and write back to each one with much thought and length, despite being short on time myself sometimes. But that's what we need to be doing, being kind to one another and not forgetting where we all started at one point.

Thanks for the honest and funny post. I hope the "blog snobs" read it! :)
